It has been seventeen years (2002!) since I first wrote my beginners bridge book, Play Bridge: A Workbook for the Absolute Beginner. It’s now into its fourth reprint, 10,000 copies having sold to clubs and individuals around Australia and other countries. Over those years, the way we approach the teaching of basic bidding and play has evolved and has actually simplified. I’m proud to announce that the newly updated edition of Play Bridge 1, is now available for sale.
Styles in teaching and presenting bridge to beginners have advanced, to appeal to people’s modern lives. So I have updated the book to reflect both these trends and new players’ needs, over many years of introducing bridge to beginners.
The book contains six chapters:
No Trumps & Responses
Suits & Responses
Opener’s Next Move
Responders Next Move
Each chapter includes four lesson hands and an analysis of each of the hands. This introduces you to how to approach both the bidding and the play of a hand. Chapters Two to Six also feature a series of exercises so you can test what you have learned.
Play Bridge 1: A Workbook for the Absolute Beginner is a great place for beginners to start to learn the fundamentals of the game quickly. You can move at your own pace and put your new skills into practise at home, at a bridge club, or online.
All the hands featured in this book are available for Gold Members to play at joanbuttsbridge.com. On the Online School of Bridge, you’re always seated South, and the bridge robots will play the other hands for you. Playing bridge online is great fun and will reinforce the lessons.
People learn in different ways - some from reading, some from listening, some from watching - but at the bridge table everyone learns faster by actually playing the game. My new book is very mindful of this fact, and is designed to get you playing as soon as possible.
