  • a balanced hand, 6 -10 points, probably four clubs

  • not four hearts, not four spades, and not four diamonds

  • If responder held a four card or longer diamond suit, they would have bid that (e.g. 1♣ p 1♦)

  • if responder held a five card or longer club suit, they would have bid that (e.g. 1♣ p 2♣)

    (2) 1♦ P 1NT, responder will hold:

  • a balanced hand, 6 -10 points

  • not four hearts, not four spades, not four diamonds (probably length in clubs)

    NB:

  • If responder held a four card or longer major, they would have bid that first (e.g. 1♦ p 1♥/♠)

  • If responder held a four card or longer diamond suit, they would have bid that (e.g. 1♦ p 2♦)

    (3) 1♥/♠ P 1NT, responder will hold:

  • a balanced OR unbalanced hand, 6 -11 points

  • fewer than three cards in the major opened
