Revision: Responder's Rebid: 2

Lesson Notes

Responder’s Rebid: 2

When opener is in the minimum range (13,14), and responder is too ( 6 -10), there’s no need for responder to keep bidding, once opener has limited their hand.
 Opener Responder
K86 ♠ J104
♥ 94 ♥ QJ86
♦ AQ1065 ♦ K3
♣A63 ♣10952

On this hand, the bidding goes 1♦ P 1♥ p 1NT. Responder, with 7 high card points, now passes, knowing game is not possible.

But when responder is in the medium or maximum range (i.e. 11,12 or 13+) they should keep the bidding going for another round, because game is possible. With 11 to 12 points, responder invites game without quite getting there.

 Opener Responder
Q2 ♠ KJ94
♥ J943 ♥ Q105
♦ AJ92 ♦ 643
♣KQ3 ♣ AJ8

On this hand, the bidding goes 1♦ P 1♥ p 1NT. Responder, with 11 high card points, invites with 2NT, because game might be possible.

That's the general idea for responder with 11–12 points after opener shows a minimum hand. If opener shows a medium or maximum hand when responder has 11–12 points, the partnership should always get to game. The partnership has more than the 25 combined points needed for game. Decisions with invitational hands require a good understanding of bidding.

Opener Responder
Q102 ♠ J94
♥ A4 ♥ KQ83
♦ KQ1073 ♦ AJ9
♣J103 ♣Q75

On this hand, the bidding goes 1♦ P 1♥ p 1NT. Opener has 13 points: 12 high card points, and 1 length point for the fifth diamond. Responder, with 13 high card points, jumps straight to game with 3NT, because game will be possible.

Now there's no stopping in a partscore. The combined partnership strength is at least 26 points (13 + 13), and responder should be targeting the best game. Listen to these auctions:

If no trumps doesn’t suit responder, because their hand is not balanced, they will show their own suit, at either a minimum, medium or maximum level.

 Opener Responder
Q102 ♠ 3
♥ A4 ♥ KQJ983
♦ KQ1073 ♦ AJ9
♣J103 ♣ Q75

On this hand, the bidding goes 1♦ P 1♥ p 1NT. Opener has 13 points: 12 high card points, and 1 length point for the fifth diamond. Responder, with 13 high card points plus 2 length points for the fifth and sixth heart, jumps straight to game in hearts, 4♥. The combined partnership strength is at least 26 points (13 + 13), and responder know opener will have at least two hearts, so there’s a fit.
With a maximum and six hearts or spades, go straight to game (4♥/♠), but with five hearts and a maximum, jump to three of your suit, (if you’re not playing New Minor Forcing)and this will allow opener to choose between 3NT or 4♥/♠. If you are playing New Minor Forcing, you will reach the same contract in a slightly different way.

Opener Responder
Q102 ♠ 43
♥ A4 ♥ KQJ98
♦ KQ1073 ♦ AJ9
♣J103 ♣ Q75

On this hand, the bidding goes 1♦ P 1♥ p 1NT. Opener has 13 points: 12 high card points, and 1 length point for the fifth diamond. Responder, with 13 high card points plus 1 length point for the fifth heart, jumps to 3♥. The combined partnership strength is at least 26 points (13 + 13), and responder is asking opener to choose between 3NT (if opener has only two hearts), and 4♥ if opener has three hearts.
