The Next Step: Responding to Doubles

Quick Tips

• Be specific about your point range when advancing partner’s double (0 - 8 = minimum, 9-11 = medium, 12+ = maximum)

• Bid immediately to the level you’d like to play if you know where

• Use the opponent’s suit (cue bid) to show partner a good hand (10+points) after their double if not sure where to play

• Try to bid a suit rather than no trumps, as partner often has shortage in the opponent’s opened suit

• Even if you have no points, you still must bid if partner doubles and the next hand passes

• Even if opener’s partner (responder) bids, you should still bid something with 6+ points in answer to partner’s double

• Bid your longest suit after partner has doubled, preferring a major
